The same principle, two thousand years on

Around the 3rd century BC, Ctesibius of Alexandria built a force pump with simple valves to set the direction of water flow. His successor, Hero, described similar devices in his writings on pneumatics.

Today the materials are stainless steel and PTFE, and tolerances are measured in microns. The job is unchanged: open, close, and control.
